.Internal frontier of the empire refers to the areas included in the Sultanate as well as the hinterland of the garrison towns. Exterior frontier refers to the territories which were not conquered by the Sultans of Delhi.

In Delhi sultanate ,

Interior Frontier : It refers to the hinterland of the garrison town.

External Frontier: This was the area outside the control of sultans.

  • The Delhi sultanate expanded.

  • These expansion happened on two basis "Internal" and "external" frontier.

  • The hinterland was called interior frontier. Under this , sultanate aimed at consolidating the hinterland of garrison town.

  • To conquer this hinterland , forests were cleared up in Ganga and Yamuna doab. These lands were given to Peasants and agriculture was encouraged.

  • Because there is a fertile soils along with the rivers , agriculture improved till a certain extent.

  • The next thing they did was expelling hunter gatherer and other pastoralist from there habitat.

  • External frontier was such area which was not under the control of Delhi sultanate.

  • To conquer these external frontier , military expedition was started in the southern India under Alauddin Khaliji.

  • Further , it was continued by Mohammed Tughlaq.

  • These sultanate armies captured horse , slaves , elephants and other precious material of these area.
