What is meant by the last line of the text? How did the Maginot Line serve as an example of this saying?

Answer:

“Generals always fight the last war” means believing in and using a strategy that has been successful in the past but is no longer a relevant strategy in the present. An example of “Fighting the Last War” is when André Maginot of France built the Maginot Line. The Maginot line was built along their border with Germany but they didn’t fortify Belgium. This was the winning move for WWI - where armies moved slowly and the Maginot line slowed those armies down even more. But, it didn’t help in WWII, when Germany flanked the Maginot line and invaded from the North, from Belgium.

Defenses that France built along its border with Germany in the 1930s, was designed to prevent an invasion. Built at a cost that possibly exceeded $9 billion in today's dollars, the 280-mile-long line included dozens of fortresses, underground bunkers, minefields, and gun batteries.

It is also the best known symbol of the adage that "generals always fight the last war, especially if they have won it". The Maginot Line was impervious to most forms of attack, and had state-of-the-art living conditions for garrisoned troops, air conditioning, comfortable eating areas and underground railways.
