What is meant by the ‘sex ratio’? What are some of the implications of a declining sex ratio? Do you feel that parents still prefer to have sons rather than daughters? What, in your opinion, could be some of the reasons for this preference?

Answer:

The ratio of number of females and males is the sex ratio.

Explanation:

Sex-ratio is calculated as number of females per thousand males in a given area. This indicates the gender population in a country. Usually number of females are more in a country than males, approx. 943 females for every 1000 males. In India, this rate is constantly declining. It is approx. 927 per thousand males in India.

Even parents in the modern day want a son rather than a daughter. The case of abortions and infanticides have been higher in states like Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Maharashtra. Probably people think that daughters leave their parent’s home after marriage and sons will support them in their old age. There are also many other mentalities prevailing in people’s minds due to which they prefer sons.
