It is a treaty between Company (British East India Company) and Indian rulers in which in return of payment company provided protection to Indian rulers. Company will place its garrison troops in rulers territory, all at the expense of native rulers.
Features of Subsidiary Alliance System:
- Any state which signed treaty with company;
- had to allow British troops in territory and pay for maintenance of the British troops in ruler's territory.
- allow British people in the territory
- was protected by Company against invasions by foes
- were not allowed to enter in alliance with any other powers.
- would not employ non-English Europeans
- in case of conflict British decision was considered final
- acknowledge company as paramountcy power
Nizam of Hyderabad was first to enter in alliance. In 1801 Oudh entered into alliance with signing Treaty of Lucknow.
