Cell division is the characteristic feature of a living organism. Growth of the body and repair of the worn out body parts occur due to cell division. Cells grow in size after their formation and reach a mature stage. After reaching a particular size, the cell divides to form two cells. This process is called cell division. The cells formed after divisions are called daughter cells. During the formation of daughter cells, the nucleus of the parent cell divides into two parts, so that each daughter cell gets one nucleus each. This is followed by the division of cytoplasm.

All animals and plants grow in size by increase in the number of cells by cell division. Children grow fast by rapid increase in the number of cells. After a certain age, the the size of the body does not increase. But, some cells in our body keep on dividing. For example, the cells of the skin continue dividing throughout the life. In the human body, each second about 30 lakh dead blood cells are replaced by new blood cells.
