The current flowing in domestic wiring at a particular time depends on the power ratings of the appliances being used. If too many electrical appliances of higher power rating eg., electric iron, water heater, air conditioner, etc. are switched on at the same time, they draw an extremely large current from the circuit. This is called overloading.
Two factors which can cause overloading in household circuits :
- Accidental high rise in the supply voltage.
- Connecting too many appliances to a single socket and using them simultaneously.
One precaution should be taken in order to prevent overloading in domestic electric circuits :
- Parallel circuits should be used and each should have fuse of proper power rating.
