Valency is the combining capacity of an atom of an element. It indicates the number of electrons accepted and donated by an atom during the formation of an electrovalent or covalent bond. For example - Sodium has 11 atomic number and when we see it's electronic configuration it's 2, 8, 1 and so it's valency is 1 because the number of electrons present in the outermost shell of Sodium is 1..
Hope it's helpful...

#Valency is the number of electrons at its outermost shell or atomic charge

#if its positive then element will lose electron to full fill its octet e.g sodium +1

#if its negative the element gain electron to fill its octet e.g oxygen -2

#hope its help you
