hey mate........

the valence or valency of an element is a measure of its combining power with other atoms when it forms chemical compounds or molecules. The concept of valencedeveloped in the second half of the 19th century and helped successfully explain the molecular structure of inorganic and organic compounds.
The valency of an element is the number of hydrogen atoms that can combine with or replace (either directly or indirectly) one atom of the element. ... For example, oxygen has six valence electrons, but its valency is 2. Some elements may have more than one combining power (or valency), while others have just one.

Valency means combining capicity of an element .

Relationship between the number of valence electrons and valency:

Valence electrons are the number of electrons present in the outermost shell of an atom.

Valency is the combing capicity of an element to form bonds with the other elements.

For Example:

Let us take the case of Oxygen whose Atomic number is 8.Thus,its electronic configuration is 2,6.

Oxygen has 6 electrons in its outermost shell and requires 2 more electrons to complete its octet state.

So,here Oxygen has 6 valence electrons and 2 as its valency .

The number of valence electrons increases from left to right in the periodic table.

If the number of valence electrons of an element is equal to 4 as that of carbon, the the element would also have same valency that is 4.

Hope it helps u!!!!!
