Quantities that only need magnitude to be defined are scalar whereas quantities that have magnitude as well as direction associated with them are vector.
Scalar quantities- speed, distance, work, temperature etc
Vector quantities- velocity, displacement, force etc
eg: 4 m/s is a scalar quantity(speed) and 4 m/s towards north is a vector quantity (velocity)
