Explanation:

the vascular tissue in plants which conducts water and dissolved nutrients upwards from the root and also helps to form the woody element in the stem.

Xylem is the specialised tissue of vascular plants that transports water and nutrients from the plant–soil interface to stems and leaves, and provides mechanical support and storage. The water‐conducting function of xylem is one of the major distinguishing features of vascular plants.

Xylem :-

▶ It is a complex permanent tissue.

▶Xylem along with Phloem known as Vascular bundles.

▶Xylem consists of tracheids, vessels, xylem parenchyma and xylem fibres. the cells have thick wall and many of them are cells dead.

▶Xylem conducts water and mineral salt upwards from roots two leaves and two different parts of the plant.

▶waste The components of xylem likeeping tracheids, vessels and xylem fibres have thick walls and so they give mechanical strength to the plant body

▶Xylem parenchyma is the only living tissue on xylem which helps in lateral conduction of water and storage of metabolic waste.

♤ The main components of this tissue are:

•Tracheids

•Vessels

•Xylem fibre

•Xylem parenchyma

Uses of Xylem:-

▶It is a conducting tissue.

▶It helps in transport of water and minerals.

▶It also helps in providing mechanical strength to plants.

▶It is made up of xylem vessels, xylem fibres, tracheids and xylem parenchyma

▶Xylem is mostly made up of dead cells.

>One of the cells in xylem tissue is xylem vessels which make a tube like structure.

Function :-

▶Xylem is present from the root to the tip of the plants and is concerned with the conduction of water and minerals upwards from the roots of the plants to the leaves.

▶Movement of water in Xylem is unidirectional.

Some points on xylem are as follows:-

1. Number of vessels in xylem are found to be less.

2. In V and Y shape those vessels are arranged.

3. Some part is composed by the seperation of cells that is called as schizogenous.

4. While most of the part of the water cavity is made up of lysis that is known as lysigenous.

5. In protoplasm there may be 1-2 small vessels.

6. While in the metaplasm there are two large vessels are found.

7. The water cavity of the xylem is schizolysigenous.

Xylem is made up of following constituents:-

Tracheids or xylem vessels: these are the tubular structure that helps in vertical transportation of minerals and water in the plants.

Xylem parenchyma: these are permanent tissues that help in the conduction of water sideways.

Xylem fibres: these provide supportive structure to the xylem tissues.
