The Janapadas (pronounced [dʑɐnɐpɐdɐ]) were the realms, republics (ganapada) and kingdoms (saamarajya) of the Vedic period on the Indian subcontinent. The Vedic period reaches from the late Bronze Age into the Iron Age: from about 1500 BCE to the 6th century BCE..

Janapadas were the realms or kingdoms of the Vedic Period on the Indian Subcontinent.

Janapada literally means the land where the Jana set its foot and settled .

Various clans developed within the Jana, each with its own chief . Gradually there came a need of defence system and that's how janapadas came in to existence .
