In classical mechanics, a particle is in mechanical equilibrium if the net force on that particle is zero. By extension, a physical system made up of many parts is in mechanical equilibrium if the net force on each of its individual parts is zero.

A system is said to be in mechanical equilibrium when no mechanical work is done by one part of the system on any other part of the system i.e.The mechanical properties are uniform throughout the system.

In classical mechanics,a particle is in mechanical equilibrium if the net force on that particle is zero.

For mechanical equilibrium to occur, the following conditions have to be met :

  • The vector sum of all external forces must be zero.

  • The sum of all movements of all external forces about any line is zero.
