Answer and Explanation:

A wave which requires a medium for propagation from one to another point is called as a mechanical wave. For producing a mechanical wave in the medium is to be produced in the medium.

Mechanical waves are of two types

1) Longitudinal waves

2) Transverse waves

In a longitudinal wave, medium particles perform oscillations in a direction parallel to the direction of propagation.

When a longitudinal waves pass through the medium, medium gets divided into regions of high and low pressure.

  • For propagation of longitudinal waves through a medium, medium must have inertia, elasticity of volume and low resistance.
  • A longitudinal wave is made up of compression and rarefaction. In compression, medium particles have velocity in the direction of propagation of the wave and in rarefaction, medium particles have velocity in the opposite direction to that of propagation of the wave.
  • Sound wave is a longitudinal wave.

In a transverse wave, medium particles perform oscillations in a direction perpendicular to the direction of propagation.

When a transverse waves pass through the medium, medium gets divided into regions, convex and concave parts.

  • For propagation of transverse waves through a medium, medium must have inertia, elasticity of shape and low resistance.
  • A transverse wave is made up of crests and troughs. When a transverse wave,  passes through the medium , pressure is same at all the points.
  • Waves produced on the strings of musical instruments are transverse wave

The waves which passes through a medium (solid, liquid and gases) are called mechanical Waves.
