Four large sized structures are present inside the typical four-lobed megasporangium. Each of those four large sized structures is known as a megaspore.

Extra Information-

  • Generally, the megaspore germinates inside the megasporangium ( that is, in situ).
  • In some species, the megaspores are shed after the development of the first archaegonium.
  • In S. kraussiana, the megaspores are shed after the development of the first archaegonium.
  • In S. apoda and S. rupestris, the megaspores are not liberated until a well developed embryo is formed.
