puberty is period in which sexual reproducibility is attained . The ovary starts producing ovum at the age of 10-11 yr's . If the fertilization takes place the fertilized egg gets implanted on the wall of utreus & if the fertilization doesn't occur then the ovum sheds along with the thickned utreus wall with the blood vessels in the form of bleeding called as menstruation or menstrual cycle . It lasts for 4-7 days

if the egg is Not ,fertilised it lives for about one day .since the ovary releases one egg every month ,the uterus also prepare itself every month to receive a fertilised egg .thus it's lining become thick and spongy . however, this lining is not needed longer .so ,the lining slowly breaks and comes out through the vagina as blood and mucous .this cycle takes place roughly every month and this is known as menstruation .
