The menstrual cycle is a series of natural changes in the uterus and ovaries of the female reproductive system that make pregnancy possible. The ovarian cycle controls the production and release of eggs. The uterine cycle governs the preparation and maintenance of the lining of the uterus to receive a fertilized egg.

In males, the reproductive phase lasts for a longer time than females. The reproductive period in females begins at puberty and lasts till the age of about 45-50 years. Ova becoming mature with the onset of puberty. One of the ovaries release one over once in a month. This is called ovalution. The wall of the uterus becomes thick to receive the egg in case fertilisation occurs. This results in pregnancy.

In case fertilisation does not occur, the egg the lining of the uterus along with blood and tissues are discharged out of the vagina. This causes bleeding in women and the process is called mensturation. It occurs once in about 28-30 days. The first menstrual bleeding that starts at puberty is called menarche. In the beginning, the menstrual cycle may be irregular but becomes regular after sometime. The menstrual cycle stops in women at the age of 45-50 years. The stoppage of menstrual cycle is called menopause.

The events which occur during menstrual cycle are:

1. The maturation of egg and its release.
2. Thickening of the uterus wall.
3. Uterus wall recieves the egg if fertilisation occurs and further development occurs.
4. Uterus wall sheds off as menstrual bleeding if fertilisation does not occur.
