Menstruation is also known as the periods. It is a regular discharge of blood and tissue (menses) from the inner lining of the uterus through the vagina. The first period usually begins at the age of puberty (12-15 years). The first period in the females is known as menarche. The length of the time between the first day of the period and the first day of the next period is usually 28 days. 

Periods happen as a hormonal released from the pituitary gland, which stimulates the release of an egg from the ovary through the process of ovulation and the same time the lining of the uterus gets thicker. The menstruation cycle prepares the body for pregnancy.
