Valency is the capacity of an atom to combine with a particular number of atoms of another element.

The valence electron of an atom take part in a chemical reaction because they have more energy than all the inner electrons. The combining capacity of an atom of an element to form chemical bond is called its valency.

The number of electrons within the outer shell of the element determine its valency.The valency of an atom is equal to the number of electrons in the outer shell if that number is four or less. Otherwise, the valency is equal to eight minus the number of electrons in the outer shell.

eg. sodium and potassium have a valency 1

lead and zinc -- 2  etc...
