Meridians: A meridian, also known as longitude is defined as the angular distance of a place east or west of the prime meridian. Prime meridian is theline of longitude whose angular distance is defined as one. Meridians are imaginary lines that run from one pole to the other intersecting at each pole. There are 360 line at 1 degree interval.

International date line: The international date line is the 180 degree line. When crossing this line from west to east a day is deducted or the time is fixed backwards one day. When crossing the IDL from east to west, a day is added or the calendar is fixed Day ahead. This is because it is diametrically opposite to the prime meridian.

To avoid confusion on having different dates within the same country, the date line is goes zig zag at the Bering strait between Siberia and Alaska and at Fiji, Tonga, New Zealand and some other islands.
