The meristem is a type of tissue found in plants. It consists of undifferentiated cells capable of cell division. Cells in the meristem can develop into all the other tissues and organs that occur in plants. These cells continue to divide until a time when they get differentiated and then lose the ability to divide.
Importance :-
- The apical meristem, also known as the “growing tip,” is an undifferentiated meristematic tissue found in the buds and growing tips of roots in plants.
- Its main function is to trigger the growth of new cells in young seedlings at the tips of roots and shoots and forming buds.

There are three primary meristems:
The protoderm, which will become the epidermis; the ground meristem, which will form the ground tissues comprising parenchyma, collenchyma, and sclerenchyma cells; and the procambium, which will become the vascular tissues (xylem and phloem).
Function :-
Apical meristems may differentiate into three kinds of primary meristem: Protoderm: lies around the outside of the stem and develops into the epidermis. Procambium: lies just inside of the protoderm and develops into primary xylem and primary phloem. Ground meristem: develops into the cortex and the pith.
