Meristematic tissue is a group of cells that has power of continuous division. Cells are immature and young. Meristematic tissue is commonly called as meristems. Shape of cell: each cell is oval, rounded, polygonal or rectangular. Size: small.

Meristematic tissue helps in the overall growth and repair. It is of three types:

1) Apical meristematic tissue.

2) Lateral meristematic tissue.

3) Intercalary meristematic tissue.

Apical meristematic tissue helps in the height growth of the tree.

Lateral meristematic tissue brings growth in the width of the tree.

Intercalary meristematic tissue is present in branches and helps the branches to grow.
