The meristem is a type of tissue found in plants. It consists of undifferentiated cells capable of cell division. Cells in the meristem can develop into all the other tissues and organs that occur in plants. These cells continue to divide until a time when they get differentiated and then lose the ability to divide.

Examples are tips of roots, stem and branches.

Characteristics of Meristematic Tissue :

  • It has small and living cells
  • The cells divide actively
  • The cells are rich in cytoplasm. They have a large prominent nucleus
  • The cells have a thin wall. The cell wall is made up of cellulose

On the basis of the position in the plant body, Meristematic Tissue is of three types :

  • Apical Meristematic Tissue
  • Lateral Meristematic Tissue
  • Intercalary Meristematic Tissue
