Meristematic tissues are composed of undifferentiated cells.

Charcterstics:-

(i) Meristematic tissues are composed of actively dividing cells.

(ii) The cells are undifferentiated.

(iii) They have thin cell walls, abundant cytoplasm and a large prominent nucleus. The vacuoles may be absent or very few if present.

(iv) The cells are compactly arranged without intercellular spaces.

Function:-

These cells actively divide to produce new cells. They bring growth of the plant like increase in height and thickness of the plant.

Location:-

They are present at the tips of roots, stems and branches, which grow in height. They are also present beneath the bark of the trees where the plant grows in thickness.
