These stages are prophase, prometaphase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. During mitosis, the chromosomes, which have already duplicated, condense and attach to spindle fibers that pull one copy of each chromosome to opposite sides of the cell.

The prophase and metaphase come under mitosis.

In prophase the nuclear membrane and nucleolus disappears. Chromatin condenses to form chromosome and centromere splits into two centrioles. Spindle fibres start appearing on the centrioles.

In metaphase the spindle fibres increases in length and all the chromosomes align in the spindle equator. The spindle fibres get attached the centromere of chromosome.
