Metabolism :

All living organisms need a continuous supply of energy and materials. Exchange of matter and energy between an organism and it's environment and the transformation of this matter and energy within the organism is called metabolism.

\bigstar Some metabolic pathways release energy by breaking down complex molecules to simpler forms. These reactions harvest energy by breaking chemical bonds and are regarded as catabolic pathways or catabolism .

\bigstar In the reverse situation, reaction consume energy to make complex molecules, like glucose from simple forms, like CO₂ and H₂O. This is called anabolic pathway or anabolism.

\bigstar No non living object exhibits metabolism. Metabolic reactions can be demonstrated outside the body in cell-free systems.

\bigstar An isolated metabolic reaction outside the body of an organism, performed in a test tube is neither living nor non living.
