  • Metagenesis - The phenomenon in which one generation of certain plants and animals reproduce asexually followed by the sexually reproducing generation.

  • Both the forms are diploid in metagenesis hence, it's the false alternation of generation.

  • Example -

  1. Coelenterates which exhibits metagenesis where polyp forms alternatively with medusa in its life cycle.
  2. The reproduction cycle of a cnidarian.
  3. Life cycle of Obelia includes both asexual and sexual generations which alternates with each other to complete the life cycle. Such alternation of generation in which the asexual polypoid generation happens /occurs to alternate regularly with the sexual medusoid generation is called Metagenesis.
