Metals: Those substances that are malleable, ductile and conduct electricity or heat.

On the basis of electronic configuration

Metal: Elements having 1 or 2 or 3 valence electrons in their outermost shell is called metal.

For e.g: Na --> 2,8,1

the propreties of metal are following:-

  1. Metals are malleable and ductile
  2. Metals are good conductors of electricity and heat.
  3. Metals are sonorous.
  4. Metals are generally hard(except sodium and potassium).
  5. Metals are Solid at room temperature(except Mercury which is a liquid metal)

 \purple{Knowledge \:  Enhancer }

  • Malleability: The property which allows the metals to be hammered into thin sheets is called malleability.
  • Ductility: The property which allows the metals to be drawn into wires is called ductility.
  • Sonorous: This means Capable (ability) of producing a ringing sound.

Metals are the types of elements which have the ability to lose electrons

Example::- Iron(Fe) , Gold(Au)

Physical Properties:-

Lustrous : Metals generally have a shiny appearance. Because of this metallic lustre metals are used for making jewellery.

Sonority : When metals are hit with a hard object they produce sound.

Ductility : Metals can be drawn into thin wires.

Malleability : Metals can ve beaten into think sheets.

They conduct heat and electricity : Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity.

Chemical Properties:-

Easily corrodible

Can lose electrons

Form basic oxides

Have lower electronegativities

Act as very good reducing agents
