Chemical metallurgy is the science of obtaining metals from their ores, and of considering reactions of metals which are usually considered with an approach of disciplines belonging to chemistry. As such, it involves reactivity of metals which are also dealt in detail by electrochemistry and corrosion.

Metallurgical engineering is based on the principles of science and engineering, and may be divided into process metallurgy, which is concerned with extracting metals from their ores to make refined alloys, and physical metallurgy, which involves the shaping, alloying, heat treatment, joining, corrosion protection
