Rock that was once one form of rock but has changed to another under the influence of heat, pressure, or some other agent without passing through a liquid phase are called metamorphic rocks. Note : Examples are marble, which can be formed from limestone, and slate, which is formed from shale.

Metamorphic rocks arise from the transformation of existing rock types, in a process called metamorphism, which means "change in form". The original rock is subjected to heat and pressure, causing profound physical or chemical change.
