Methane:-

Methane is a colourless and odourless gas that occurs abundantly in nature and as a product of certain human activities.

•It is a potent greenhouse gas, which is second only to carbon dioxide in it's capacity to trap heat in the Earth's atmosphere for a long time.

•The chemical formula of methane

is CH.

•Methane has a boiling point of -162°C and a melting point of -182.5°C.

How is Methane formed/produced??

•In nature, methane is produced by the anaerobic bacterial decomposition of vegetable matter under water. Thus, Wetlands are the major natural sources of methane produced in this way.

•Other important natural sources of methane include volcanoes, termites etc.

•The combustion and production of coal and natural gas are the major human-associated sources of methane.

•Some other human activities like livestock farming, biomass burning etc are also associated with methane production.
