Microorganism can be divided into five major groups are as follows __

▪ Viruses ( Singular : virus )

They are the smallest and oldest organisms on our planet and are found in four different shapes
• Rod shaped ( bacilli )
• Spherical ( cocci )
• Curved ( commas )
• Spiral ( spirilla )

Algae can be unicellular or multicellular . Chlorella, chlamydomonas and diatoms are the example of microscopic algae .

Protozoa are unicellular organism that have animal like characteristics. They can move from place to place . They capture and eat food__ Amoeba, Paramecium and Euglena are examples of protozoa .

Plants-like organism that do not contain chlorophyll are called fungi . Fungi maybe unicellular or multicellular .
Yeast and Moulds are examples of microscopic fungi .

Viruses are smaller than any non self they are so small that they cannot be seen by a light microscope .
Viruses do not have a cellular structure like other microorganisms .
Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus ( HIV) are examples of viruses .

■ One single teaspoon of soil contains 1 billion bacteria, 120000 fungi and 25000 algae.

■ Microbes have been around longer than anything else on earth, longer even then dinosaurs .

■ There are 10 times more bacteria in the average humans digestive system then there are cells in the entire body . This is approximately 1 kg of bacteria .

■ There are more microbes on one person's and then there are people on the planet .

■ Microbes generate at least half the oxygen we breathe .

■ Most microbes do not cause disease-less than 5% do .

■ A study found that 30% of all people didn't wash their hands after using a public bathroom- although 90% claimed they do. Jusy think what may be on their hands !
