Literally, elections that happen in the middle of the term. Here in India, the tenure both of state legislatures as well as the Parliament is five years. During this period if the ruling party loses a bill, or dissolves assembly/parliament for tactical reasons, or loses majority due to defections etc., or cannot win a vote of confidence facing opposition-sponsored No Confidence Motion, the ruling party loses the right to govern.
