Minerals are classified into two types: Metallic and non-metallic. Metallic Minerals: They are further sub-divided into ferrous and non-ferrous. Ferrous minerals: They contain iron. Examples are iron ore, manganese ore, chromite, pyrite, nickel, and cobalt

A mineral is a naturally occurring substance, representable by a chemical formula, that is usually solid and inorganic, and has a crystal structure.

Minerals are broadly divided into 2 types -->

1) Metallic minerals

2) Non-metallic mineral

1) Metallic mineral

a) Ferrous - They contain Iron in them. Eg- Manganese, nickel, cobalt

b) Non-ferrous - They don't contain Iron in them. Eg-Copper, lead, tin

c) Precious - Gold, silver, platinum

2) Non-Metallic mineral  

Mica, marble, sandstone, limestone, granite.

Another type is Energy minerals

Example- Coal, petroleum, natural gas
