Mirage is the phenomenon of optical illusion observed in deserts or over hot extended surfaces like a coal - tarred road, due to which a traveller sees a shimmering pond of water some distance ahead of him and in which the surrounding objects like trees, etc., appear inverted.

mirage is concept that occurs with the help of refractive index...... in desert temperature of low level ground is high and this temperature decrease while going upwards light rays coming from the sun is get refracted through this cold air and finally this rays goes through eyes of observer and inverted image is formed in desert but it is not real..... this is the answer of your asked question
