The missing data 40 28 35 37 20 18 16 when median is 26 is 15.

Median is defined as the middle value or middle term in given set of data. In other words median is a value separating the higher half from the lower half of data sample.

It is calculated by if number of terms are odd then directly the middle value.

If number of terms are even then the average of two middle terms.

As in the above data median is 26 but number of terms given are 7 so it should be equal direct to middle value. Since this is not so the data has one missing term and terms are 8 that is even.

For even median is average of two middle terms that is 4th and 5th term.

Let missing term be x and second term is 37 and median is 26 so we have:-

(x + 37)/2 = 26

(x + 37) = 52  ; x = 52- 37

So x = 15

Hence missing data is 15.
