On the occasion of World Toilet Day, Mission Nirmal Bangla was launched in Bengal on November 19, 2013. In the last four and a half years, 8 districts, 2,266 gram panchayats and 28,102 villages have been declared open defecation free (ODF). This scheme has received international acclaim from the UN as well.
Nadia was the first district in India to be declared ODF. Till January 31, 2018, seven more districts have been declared ODF: Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, South 24 Parganas, Cooch Behar, East Burdwan and West Burdwan.
Malda and Howrah will be declared ODF soon. South Dinajpur, Birbhum, Murshidabad are next in line. All districts will be made ODF by the end of 2018-19 fiscal year.
In the last four and half years, 58,73,540 household toilets have been constructed. 1,608 community sanitary complexes have been constructed as well. Scientific solid and liquid waste management has been a focus area during the construction of these toilets.
The fund allocation for this project has seen an increase in the last couple of years. In 2012-13, Rs 254 crore was allocated for this project. In 2017-18, the amount increased to Rs 2661 crore, despite a reduction in Centre’s share from 75:25 to 60:40.
500 additional community sanitary complexes will be built in rural areas. Solid and liquid waste management programmes will be taken up at additional 500 gram panchayats. Thrust is being given on awareness programmes as well.

গত ২০১৩ সালের ১৯শে নভেম্বর (ওয়ার্ল্ড টয়লেট ডে) পশ্চিমবঙ্গে নির্মল বাংলা মিশন চালু হয়। গত সাড়ে চার বছরে ৮টি জেলা, ২,২৬৬টি গ্রাম পঞ্চায়েত, ২৮,১০২টি গ্রাম নির্মল হয়েছে। এই উদ্যোগ পেয়েছে জাতীয় ও আন্তর্জাতিক স্বীকৃতি।
নদীয়া জেলা দেশের প্রথম নির্মল জেলা ঘোষিত হয়। ৩১শে জানুয়ারি ২০১৮ পর্যন্ত আরও যে সাতটি জেলা নির্মল জেলা ঘোষিত হয়েছে, সেগুলি হল, হুগলী, উত্তর ২৪ পরগনা, পূর্ব মেদিনীপুর, দক্ষিণ ২৪ পরগনা, কোচবিহার, পূর্ব বর্ধমান, পশ্চিম বর্ধমান। মালদা ও হাওড়া জেলা খুব শীঘ্রই নির্মল জেলা হিসেবে স্বীকৃতি পেতে চলেছে। তারপর দক্ষিণ দিনাজপুর, বীরভূম ও মুর্শিদাবাদকেও নির্মল জেলা ঘোষণা করা হবে।২০১৮-১৯ সালে বাকি জেলাগুলিকেও নির্মল জেলা ঘোষণা করার পরিকল্পনা নেওয়া হয়েছে।
