Mitochondria is a cell organelle that is responsible for energy production in the cell. It is a double membraned structure consisting of an outer membrane and an inner membrane. The inner membrane is deeply folded to increase the area for energy production. These are known as cristae. On the cristae there are small spherical structures present known as F₀ particles or F₁ particles or Oxysomes. They are responsible for energy production in the form of ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) molecules. ATP is the energy currency of the cell.
Mitochondria are strange cell organelles in the sense that they have theor own DNA and ribosomes (protein factories of the cell), so they are able to make some of their own proteins. Hence, mitochondria are also known as semi autonomous organelles.
Hope this helps.

Mitochondria are found in both plants and animals cells.
It is a 2 walled structure.
The outer mitochondrial membrane is smooth.
The inner mitochondrial is folded into finger like projections. These projections are known as cristae.
The space within mitochondria is known as mitochondrial chamber.
The space filling jell like proteinaceous substance is its matrix.
Mitochondria has its own genetic material.
