1.Each mitochondria is a rod shaped structure surrounded by a double membrane.

2.The outer membrane is smooth and the inner one is folded into a large number of finger like structure called Cristae.

3.Since mitochondria are involved in the production of energy of various processes they are generally called powerhouse of the cell.
