The mitochondrion is a double membrane-bound organelle found in most eukaryotic organisms. Some cells in some multicellular organisms lack mitochondria. A number of unicellular organisms, such as microsporidia, parabasalids, and diplomonads, have reduced or transformed their mitochondria into other structures.

These are rod or oval-shaped, small structures bound by a double membrane. They are also called powerhouses of the cell. In a mitochondrion, energy is released from nutrients and converted to readily usable form of biological energy called ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate). Bacteria are red blood cells do not have mitochondria.
