Molisch test , a test used for determining carbohydrate. It is based on dehydration of carbohydrate by sulfuric acid to produce an aldehyde.
Pentoses are dehydrated to furfural while hexoses to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. These aldehydes will then condense with two molecules of phenol resulting in purple coloured compound.
