The inability of a body to change it’s state of rest or of uniform motion by itself is called inertia

Divini: yes .That is Inertia. But I am asked about the moment of inertia.
Neasan: a quantity expressing a body's tendency to resist angular acceleration, which is the sum of the products of the mass of each particle in the body with the square of its distance from the axis of rotation.
Divini: Thank you

Moment of Inertia:

  • Moment of Inertia of a particle about axis of rotation is defined as product of its mass and square of distance from axis of rotation.MI of particle= mr²
  • Moment of Inertia is the sum of moment of Inertia of individual particle. I = sigma mr²
  • Moment of Inertia plays same role in rotational motion as mass in linear motion.
  • Moment of Inertia not only depends on mass but also on distribution of mass from axis of rotation.
