Hello Friend,
→ Momentum is defined as the product of mass and velocity of an object.
So, P = m v
→ As velocity is a vector quantity, and mass is scalar, momentum is a vector quantity.
→ The momentum of a body gives us some important information about the moving body.
It is a better quantity over inertia.
• For example, consider a cycle and a truck. Which one can do more damage to you?
You might be tempted to say 'truck', because of its heavier mass, but you don't know whether it's moving or not.
Of course, a moving cycle can do more damage than a stationary truck.
Thus, the mass of a body cannot give us information about its motion.
On the other hand, the momentum gives us a combined information about the mass and speed of an object.
→ Now, momentum depends upon two factors: Mass and Velocity
• Consider a bike, and a car moving with the same velocity, say 40 km/h.
Here, the car is heavier. So it has more momentum
Thus, more the mass, more is the momentum.
• Now, consider two bullets of the same gun. Now consider two cases:
(i) A bullet thrown towards you by hand
(ii) A bullet shot by a gun
Of course, in the first case, you wouldn't be scared. Nothing will happen to you. But in the second case, you can get killed.
Here, the two bullets are identical. But what makes one deadly over the other is its high speed. The bullet shot from the gun has more momentum.
Thus, more the velocity, more is the momentum.
→ As we see, only velocity or only mass provides us only an incomplete idea of the object. But Momentum is such a quantity, which gives us the combined idea.
The concept of momentum is useful in many places. One important result is the law of conservation of momentum.
→ If the resultant external force acting on a system is zero, then the total momentum of the system remains constant.
This is the statement of the Law of Conservation of Momentum.
It has tremendous application.
For example, consider two balls moving towards each other. After they collide, their velocities will change. But the remarkable thing is that the total final momentum is the same as total initial momentum.
I hope I have been able to provide a nice explanation.
Feel free to ask for any doubts.
Hope it helps.
