The English name monsoon, was derived from the Arabic word mausim, the Malayan word monsin, or Asiatic word mawsim meaning 'seasons'. The term was first used in English in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and neighboring countries to refer to the big seasonal winds blowing from the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea in the southwest bringing heavy rainfall to the region. Monsoon is a seasonal prevailing wind which lasts for several months. It refers to a season having very heavy rainy weather in the area of the Indian subcontintent tropical zone.
India witnesses two types of monsoons :-
- The southwest monsoons and the northeast monsoons. The major portion of the rainfall in the country comes from the southwest monsoon that hits India's western coast by early June and covers the rest of the country by mid July.
- The northeast monsoons can be witnessed along the eastern coast of the country in November and December. They are concentrated and short. The majority of rainfall in the southern states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala comes from these monsoons.
