 \bf The \: Moon

A celestial body revolving around a planet is known as a satellite. All the planets except Mercury and Venus have natural satellites. The moon is the earth's only natural satellite. The moon has no light of its own. It reflects the light from the sun. Because the moon is nearer to the earth, it appears to be much bigger than the stars. Actually, all the stars and planets are much bigger than the moon. The moon is 3,84,400 kilometres far from the earth. Time taken by the moon to complete one revolution around the earth is 28 days and 8 hours (27.3 days)

The moon's surface is made up of mountains and craters. Craters are saucer-shaped holes formed when asteroids and comets from the space hit the moon's surface. There are many steep and high mountains on the surface of the moon. The moon has no air and, hence, no atmosphere. Since sound needs medium (air) to travel and moon has no air, you cannot hear any sound on the moon. No life exists on the moon because of the absence of atmosphere (air) and unfavourable temperature. Surface temperature varies from 123° C to 233° C. We can only see one side of the moon. This is because the moon rotates about its axis in about the same time that it takes to orbit the earth. This results in the same face turned towards the earth at all times.
