According to Hindu philosophy and much of Bhuddhism primary goal of human lifeis to achieve Moksha so that we are releaved from endless cycle of birth and death. Vedas suggest mainly two methods to achieve moksha.
1) Emerge through meditaion/ atma-gnana.
Achieve enlightement through meditation and yoga. This gives knowledge about self or atma-gyana. We rise through seven chakras through atma-gnana and yoga. At last at sahasrara chakra we achieve moksha.
2) Observing and studying material nature/bahya gnana.
We can systematically study the material world surrounding it. Doing it with no material desires is param-punya. And observing jivatma as a part of the world we see through tapas. Or better, they explain nature as fifth level of conciousness. When our self-conciousness combines with prakriti/fifth level of consiousness we achieve moksha. Gurus at vedic time achieve moksha through this.
Here what you can see is, Gautama Bhuddha achieved Moksha/serenity through first method. While it is actually advicible, that kind self control and practice is not possible at this modern age. Another pure soul who achieved moksha through this method is Swami Vivekananda. His level of conciousness and teachings are compatible and more practical with modern age.
Scientists like Albert Einstein studied material nature but their discoveries where intended for material benefit of humanity. They never understood their self through any meditation or tapas. Hence they never achieved moksha.
Buddha or Swami Vivekananda and Einstein have knowledge. But former had knowledge of material nature and self. But latter has only knowledge of material nature.
It is definitely important to have knowledge about self (tatva or darshanika shastra) and material nature (modern science) like Swami Vivekananda and Bhuddha.
Hope it helps.
