In many ways, nations resemble people. Just like human beings, nations go through mood swings. Sometimes their populations are ecstatic, and at other times a psychological malaise hovers over the land. In Biblical times, when Israel's national mood turned sour, when it seemed that there was little hope and even less chance of improvement, Israel was often blessed with prophets who knew how to say the correct words at the correct time. One of these prophets may have been Hosea.

The prophet Hosea might have been one of the earliest of the prophets to come from Biblical Israel's 10 northern tribes. In other words, he was a perennial outsider. Scholars often view him as one the first of the so-called "minor" prophets. Born after the northern Kingdom of Israel's separation from the southern Kingdom of Judea, Hosea offered a prophecy of hope in the midst of doom and gloom. The classical rabbis saw Hosea as the midway point between Moses, the man who loved Israel and Balaam, the man who tried and failed to curse Israel. Hosea as the outsider was part of Israel but not a lover of Israel. Like the national mood of his day, he was often angry. In the end, he defended his people but it was God who had to teach him that love is more than word, love is not what we say but what we do.

Hosea reminds us that in Judaism repentance, judgment, personal struggle and measurement are all part of prayer. To pray in Judaism is less about asking God to do something for us, than it is to judge oneself, to see the errors of one's ways; to find a way to correct these errors. Prayer in this regard is the seeking of wisdom, the struggle to attempt to know God's plan for each of us and then put this plan into action. Hosea brings into Judaism the fact that we are more than merely God's creatures and servants; we are also God's partners in the constant unfolding of history.

Hosea (active 750-722 B.C.) was a prophet of the kingdom of Israel. He called on Israel to repent its sins of apostasy and warned of the judgment to come from God. His writings form the first of the Old Testament books of the Minor Prophets.

the main message of Hosea

Contribution. Hosea is a prophet whom God uses to portray a message of repentance to God's people. Through Hosea's marriage to Gomer, God, also known as Yahweh, shows his great love for his people, comparing himself to a husband whose wife has committed adultery.
