After Blenheim
- In this poem, Southey has nicely depicted the summer evening where old Kaspar was sitting in the sun and feeling outside of the cottage.
- Suddenly his grandchild comes to him and ask, "What he had found / That was so large, and smooth and round."
- Then old Kaspar replies her it's a skull of some poor fellow who was defeated in the war. Then young Peterkin asks his grandfather to tell the story of war.
- There are lot of skulls and skeletons must hide in the sand. It was England who defeated French in the Battle of Blenheim. Everybody praised the Duke of Marlbro and prince Eugene for their victories. A lot of soldiers, people died In this war. Even childing mothers and new-born babies also died in this vulgar battle.
- Moreover old Kaspar's house was burnt at Blenheim. So old Kaspar's father was forced to 'fly'. But old Kaspar repeatedly emphasized "that 't was a famous victory".
- Obviously it was a famous victory but what about those families who were lost their kith and kin forever? They were highly pressurised by trauma. Only he or she can understand the pain who has lost his or her friends, neighbors, family members etc.
- So according to the old Kaspar it was a famous victory. It is better to say a victory that costed lives.
