Explanation:

When an object changes its place with respect to its surrounding is known as motion.

All the objects are either moving or in the stationary state ie they can be in a state of rest or motion.

With this, we introduce a term kinematics. Kinematics is a branch of physics that deals with the motion of material object around us with the measurement of time but without considering the cause of motion.

Students often considered that object at rest are in a natural state as no force acts on them. However it is to be understood that it is a relative term and two objects moving with the same velocity and in the same direction are also considered to be at rest with respect to each other.

Motion is a relative term with respect to its surroundings and observers.

Different states of body with respect to motion are as follows:

  • State of Rest

An object is said to be at rest if the position of the object does not change with respect to a fixed point taken as the reference point in its surroundings with the passage of time.

  • State of Motion

An object is said to be in motion if it changes its position with respect to a fixed point in its surroundings taken as the reference point in its surroundings with passage of time.

We can conclude that:

  • The state of body (rest or motion) is defined with respect to a reference point, which is a fixed point corresponding to which the position of the object is specified and therefore depends on our choice of reference point or frame of reference.
  • Rest and motion are not absolute but relative.
