Motivation is the reason for people's actions, willingness and goals. Motivation is derived from the word 'motive' which is defined as a need that requires satisfaction. These needs could also be wants or desires that are acquired through influence of culture, society, lifestyle, etc. or generally innate. 

Needs, Goals and Motives: Motivation can also be described as the driving force within individuals that impels them to action. As shown in the figure 3.2, this driving force is the result of tension, which in turn is because of unfulfilled needs. To reduce tension, every individual strives for fulfilling their needs.
