Multilateral settlement system is a unique kind of economic system through which the deficit of one country with another is balanced by its excess production with a third nation. For instance, during the 19th century, Britain had a 'trade surplus' in India as the price of British commodities to India was extremely higher than the price of British imports from India. In this way, the deficit from other countries to Britain was balanced with the surplus of the trade from India.
